The Hold Steady played a great show last week at the Belly Up in Solana Beach.

They’re a pretty divisive band: lots of people love them, others can’t stand them. I’m in the first camp, but they’re an acquired taste. I think seeing them live turns most people around. The energy they put out is amazing, and it really is like some sort of revival.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring

I just can’t get over how great the Eddy Current Suppression Ring is. They have a new record coming out soon I think, but their most recent, Primary Colors, is mind blowing.

While sounding completely fresh and authentic, this band recalls the Velvet Underground, JSBX, and Rhys Chatham. Musical, punk-bloozey, and minimal. Seriously minimal. The last half-minute or so of Primary Colors’ opener, Memory Lane, is just nice, dirty guitar.

Anyway, these Australian dudes are good, and make a good argument for a non-ironic and unaffected return to stripped down garage.

Here's a wikipedia link.
