I am very excited to be attending An Event Apart this coming week.

One of the things I always pine for in a city I am visiting is a concise list—put together by like minded folks—of cool places to eat, drink and do whatever. I have lived in San Diego for almost eight years, so I feel qualified to put one together.

Food and Drink

The Linkery

The Linkery serves excellent farm to table food in a laid back atmosphere. They also have a killer rotating beer list.

Seven Grand

Seven Grand has about a million types of Whiskey. They use them to craft mean cocktails. If you are not a whiskey drinker but enjoy beer it is still worth checking out for the decor.

The Red Fox Steakhouse

Old-school steaks, with a wonderfully eclectic clientele and, on most nights, live piano jazz

Hamilton’s Tavern

The best beer bar in San Diego. Great bar food too.

Star Bar

The best dive bar downtown. The crowd is diverse and the drinks reasonably priced. They don’t appear to have a website, so maybe one of us nerds can build them on in exchange for booze.

Nightlife

The Casbah

The Casbah is a world class music venue. Think Empty Bottle in Chicago or Troubador in L.A. It is loud, gritty and fun.

Outdoors

Beaches

Locally, Ocean Beach or Mission Beach are your best bets. Ocean Beach is more laid back, stoney and bohemian. Mission has good facilities and more parking.

Balboa Park

A huge park in the center of the city with museums, a botanical building and the San Diego Zoo.

North Park Festival Of Arts

If you are lucky enough to be in town on the Saturday before AEA, this street fest has good music and beer and is in the heart of North Park.
